Lekopiro Francis Nonai

Francis was born in the Mewa area 16 kilometers from Ndonyo Wasin village. He is the sixth child born in a family of 7 children. In 2004 a preschool/kindergarten opened up near his home. Classes took place under a large acacia thorn tree with a blackboard propped against the tree trunk and the teacher was a warrior with six years of schooling. Since Francis’ parents had other children older than him to help look after their animals they decided that they would send Francis to preschool. At preschool Francis did very well and it was clear that he really enjoyed learning numbers and letters.
His family members are all traditional nomadic pastoralists and they move from one place to another in search of pasture and water for their livestock. Their cows and goats are the sole source of the family’s food.
Francis has always been at the top of his class. He achieved marks of 311 in his final exams in class 8. He was on the school volleyball team. Last year he was group leader in mathematics. He is a sociable and outgoing person with immense persistence and determination. He says his motto is “never give up.” He understands what his life would be like without the opportunity to receive a good education.
