Lepakiyo Rose

Rose Lepakiyo was born in 1999 in the Samburu area of Ndonyo Wasin at Nesesai village. She is the first born in a family of 6, and the first person in her family to go to school. The third and fourth born attend Nesesiai pre-school; one of the pre-school supported by the Thorn Tree Project. Her other siblings live the Samburu traditional way of life; herding cows and goats and migrating long distances during the droughts in search of water and pasture.
Though, Rose’s parents are not formally educated they have made a commitment to send her to school so that she has an opportunity to lead “a less harsh life.” Rose is a brilliant student who through her hard work has consistently been ranked among the top students in her class. She achieved marks of 349 in her exams and she has been accepted at St Theresa’s Girls school in Wamba, one of the top girls’ schools in the country. Rose enjoys reading books in the school library and playing soccer. She was on the school team as a striker. She is also a skilled debater and she sings in the school choir.
