Lesaare Johana Lmetekini

Johana was born in 2000 and is the first born of four children. His parents, who are traditional nomadic pastoralists, live in Mewa village in the Ndonyo Wasin area. Johana is the only one in his family to go to school. His parents are traditional nomadic pastoralists who migrate during the frequent droughts in search of pasture for their cows and goats, which are their sole source of food.
In 2003 a preschool/kindergarten opened near his home. It took place under a large thorn tree with a blackboard propped against the tree trunk. The teacher was a warrior with a few years of schooling. His father was an active member of the school committee and decided to send his first born to school. From his very first day Johana was enamored with everything there – letters, numbers, writing with a pencil.
He went to Ndonyo Wasin Primary School (grades 1 to 8) when he was 6 years old as a full time boarder and he has always been in the top of his class. On his final exams in grade 8 he achieved marks of 362, which puts him in the top 8% of the country. When he is not studying he enjoys playing soccer. He has been form prefect and dormitory prefect and a team leader in mathematics.
