Lesanjir Festus Saitore

Festus was born in 2000 and lives in the Lerata area of Samburu. He has 3 siblings. Their father died when Festus was 10 years old. He lives with his mother and siblings in the large manyatta of his father’s brothers. They all live the traditional nomadic Samburu life. His mother attended the Lerata primary school for several years when she was young. Recently she used her education to open and run a small shop in Lerata village where she sells basic food items to help support her 3 children.
At Lerata primary school, Festus has been a hardworking and committed student. His persistence and determination have put him among the top 5 students in the class since he started school. In his final KCPE exams he achieved marks of 310 with an excellent score in English of 71%. He received a place at the Cheptenye School, one of the top 100 high schools in the country. His goal is simple – he wants to get a good education which in turn will help him get a great job so he can then help his mother and siblings to “live a less harsh life.” Festus is an avid reader and says he has read every book in the library. He is looking forward to having an entirely new library to read through when he goes off to high school. He also served as class prefect last year and played for the soccer team.
