Letimorit Evaline Naela

Evaline comes from the Lerata area and she is the 5th born in a family of eight. Her family are traditional Samburu nomadic pastoralists. They subsist on the cows and goats they own, traveling constantly in search of water and pasture for their animals.
Evaline is the first in her family to go to school. She started her education in 2007 at the Learata Preschool. When Evaline was 3 years old she was attacked by a hyena and badly mauled on her face and head. She was in and out of hospital for three years. The attack left her with numerous scars. When she was 7 years old she asked her father if she could go to school. She knew exactly what she wanted to do when she grew up — she wanted to be in a hospital helping people. Her father, who loved her very much, was not that happy about her going to school because the school was 10 kilometers away. Eventually he agreed and made arrangements for her to sleep at school during the week. So she boarded at the school and just walked home every weekend.
Evaline is an extremely clever girl. She has been the top female student at Lerata School since she started. She is excellent at mathematics and science. She is a great reader and very popular with her classmates who know that they can go to her for help on any subject or topic they don’t understand. In spite of her terrible accident she is very optimistic and positive about life. She is outgoing, friendly and very determined. Evaline said she knows who she is and where she wants to go. In her class 8 exams she achieved marks of 308. She has been offered a place at Ahero Girls’ High school, which is a very good school. She attributes her success to the encouragement and support of her parents and her love of learning new things.
