Letiwa Satoni

Satoni was born in 2004 and is the first born in a family of three children. He is the first in his family to attend school and prides himself on setting a good example for his siblings. Satoni’s father passed away when he was ten years old, so he is being brought up by his mother. Satoni’s mother finished class 8 and is a preschool teacher, but her salary is so little that she is unable to support Satoni in school. Satoni’s mom and siblings live in Sere Olipi village and during school holidays, Satori helps his mother with domestic chores like fetching water, cooking and gathering firewood.

Satoni started preschool when he was just four years old—and as a result, stayed there for two years. In 2010, he was promoted to class one at Sere Olipi Primary School. While at Sere Olipi, he loved mathematics. His mother supplemented his math education by giving him extra exercises each night at home. His future goal is to become an Engineer and he knows that doing well in mathematics will crucial to achieving this goal. Satoni also loves playing football and watching it on TV—whenever he has the opportunity. Satoni played on the school’s football team and in Class 7 was appointed the Deputy Captain of Sports. He was also a member of the Health Club. He learned how to keep his surroundings clean and to promote hygiene for himself and among his peers. In fact, when he was in class 8, he was elected the class prefect, which he credits with teaching him how to solve problems, being humble and leading by example.
