Leghalahi Sebastian




Sebastian started school at Leangata preschool – a nomadic pre-school that took place under a tree near his home. It opened in 2002 and Sebastian was among the first students enrolled there. He joined Ndonyo Wasin Primary School in 2003. In the 8 years he was at primary school He was consistently at the top of the class. He says he has always loved being at school from the first day he sat under the tree and watched the teacher write the alphabet on the blackboard propped against the tree trunk. He scored 334 marks in his KCPE exams in 2010.

His family lives in the Leangata area. His mother is a Samburu and his father is a Rendile. He is the third born in a family of eight children. He and his 9-year-old brother are the only ones to go to school. Like all the people in Ndonyo Wasin area his family lost 80% of their animals in the drought of 2009 and his mother collects Gum Arabica from the desert bush to sell for food.

Sebastian loves playing soccer and volleyball. He would like to be a nurse or doctor when he grows up and be able to help those who cannot afford basic healthcare.
