Lucy is from the Ndume area about 20 miles from Ndonyo Wasin village which in turn is 30 miles from the main road. Her family are traditional nomadic pastoralists who depend solely on their herds of cows and goats for food. They migrate frequently during the drought periods in search of grass and water for their animals.
She started school when she was 4 years old at the Thorn Tree preschool in Ndume . The teaching takes place under the shadiest thorn tree around with a blackboard propped against the tree trunk. Her father was the preschool teacher. She loved preschool and she was delighted when her father said she could go to be a boarder at Ndonyo Wasin Primary School when she was 6 years old.
At school, Lucy has been an excellent student. She wakes up very early in the morning to make sure she is prepared to start the activities of the day. She works hard and has always been among the top students in class. She did well in her KCPE exams with marks of 316 which puts her in the top 15% of the country. She enjoys reading books in the school library and playing soccer. Lucy was on the school team as a striker. She is also a great debater and she sings in the school choir.
