Lemeriwas Jonathan

Jonathan was born in 1995. His mother died in 1997 and he lived with his father and step mother with his three step brothers and sisters in a traditional nomadic home at Laresoro which is 25 kilometers from Lerata village. He has one older sister and two older brothers. His brothers are traditional warriors who look after the family cows and goats – migrating with them in search of pasture and water. In the very bad drought of 2002 there was no milk and no animals to look after so his father talked it over with his sister and they decided he should go and live with her in Lerata and attend Lerata Primary School where the government were providing a free lunch. He is the only person in his family to go to school. Jonathan is very grateful for his education. He knows that with it he will be able to help both himself and his family lead a less harsh life and be able to mitigate some of the worst effects of the droughts. He has a strong sense of duty and wants to go to a good technical school to learn to be a mechanic and then use this qualification to get a job that will enable him to help his family. He achieved marks of 277 on his KCPE exams
