Lemerketo Josphat

Josphat was born in 1996. His family are traditional nomadic pastoralists. They are based most often a few kilometers from Sereolipi but in the drought they move constantly in search of water and pasture for their animals, as far away as 50 kilometers. Josephat has 3 brothers and 2 sisters. The brothers look after the cows and goats and the 2 sisters are married. He is the only one in his family to go to school. His mother died in 2008.

Josephat went to Sereolipi Primary School in 2003. From the first day he says he know he was in the right place. He loved learning and was a disciplined student. He believed that education was going to change his life and also that of his family.

He has always been number 1 or 2 in class. He says the key to his success is getting up at 5am to study before anyone else is there. He is on the soccer team and loves reading storybooks in the library in his free time.

Josephat lives in a large manyatta with a large extended family of more than 20 children and lots of aunts and uncles. He is gregarious and also a very caring person. He helps the sick and old in his holidays. He wants to do community work when he finishes school.
