Andrew was born in 1990 and he did not join school until he was 12 years old. He comes from a traditional nomadic pastoralist family. His father has 12 children and he wanted all his sons to be herders. Francis knew from an early age that he wanted to go to school. He had seen that the other boys who had gone to school could read and write and wanted to do it too. He says that even when he was 7 he could see that education would be the way out of his family’s harsh life.

In 2002 his father finally agreed that he could go to school and he sat on the first day at a desk, which was too small for him surrounded by 6 year olds. He said he did not mind at all he was just happy to be finally there. He has studied hard ever since and achieved excellent marks of 316 in his KCPE exams. He is highly motivated and committed and very focused on doing well so that he can get a good job and help his mother and his siblings. He was on the volleyball team and he has won several medals in the district athletics championship.
