Lenaipa Francis

Francis is a boy born in 1994 from Ndonyo Wasin village in Samburu. He is the second born of six children and lives with his mother. His father passed away a number of years ago. His oldest sister is married, while the third oldest child looks after livestock. Francis is the first in his family to go to school. He joined school when he was 10 years old. He was encouraged to get an education by his father when he was still alive — his father worked at an old vermiculite mine in the area and he felt he was often taken advantage of because he was illiterate. In 2004 when Francis was 10 years old his father took him to primary school. Francis is very grateful that his father did this for him, he can see that he has the possibility of a “better future than my agemates who did not go to school.” Francis achieved marks of 200 in his KCPE exams and he approached us with tenacity and determination to attend a technical school course in masonry. He had become very interested in masonry when he saw the new buildings of the Ndonyo Wassin Primary School being constructed, and knew that he wanted to learn the trade to contribute to his community. Since then, he’s assisted in both masonry and carpentry around the school and is eager to develop his expertise further.
