Lepoora John

John was born in 1993. His family lives in Ndonyo Wasin and they are traditional nomadic pastoralists. He is the fifth born and has 4 sisters 3 of whom are married and 3 brothers who look after the family cows and goats. Most of their cows died during the drought of 2009 but they have started to build their herd back up. The brothers are expert honey gatherers and this supplements the milk from the goats and cows.

He joined Ndonyo Wasin Primary School in 2001 at the pre-school level and he is the only one in his family to go to school. During the droughts he had to help his brothers migrate with the cows and he has been absent from school for long periods and this has affected his academic performance. He achieved marks on his KCPE exams of 215. However he has always been committed to his schooling and never wanted to drop out. He very much wants to go to technical school so that he can learn a skill that will get him a job. He has a strong sense of duty to his family and he wants to be able to support them through the droughts and ease their harsh life.
