Lesepe Caro

Caro is the oldest child in a family of four. Her family are traditional nomadic pastoralists who move in search of water and pasture for their animals. Caro’s father is one of only a handful of people in the Lerata area who has a high school education. He has occasional work at Namanyak conservancy when he is needed to translate and guide visitors and he is an active member of the Lerata Primary School PTA. Caro is the top girls student at Lerata school. She is excellent at mathematics. In her end of class 8 exams she achieved marks of 292 and she has been offered a place at a very good high school. She attributes her success to the encouragement support of her parents.
When Caro was born, Caro’s father and her mother made a commitment to send all of their children to school. They understood the importance of education and believed that education was essential if their children were to lead a less harsh life. Without children to help with the herding they have relatively few animals and certainly not enough to sell for the school fees and supplies for the next 4 years.
