Lessewua Francis

Francis was born in 1989 in Sereolipi. His mother died when he was young and he lives with his father, stepmother and six siblings. His parents are traditional nomadic pastoralists and are totally dependent on livestock for their livelihood. They live 6 kilometers away from the school. The extreme drought that affected the country in 2005 through 2006 has had a devastating effect on their lives. Of the 25 cows and 60 goats they had in 2005 they now have none. They have had to borrow animals from relatives to survive and to build up their herds again.

Francis joined Sereolipi Primary School 8 years ago when he was 9 years old and graduated in December 2006. He has been a hardworking and committed boy in his studies and excelled at soccer. He achieved marks of 300 in the national examinations and was top of his class. In 2007 he was admitted to Kirisia Secondary School in Maralal.
