Leyopoko Estalina

Estalina Leyopoko was born in 1996 in an area called Leangata, 15 kilometers from Ndonyo Wasin village. She is the sixth born in a family of 5 boys and 3 girls. In 2003 she was the first in her family to attend the newly established local preschool – a blackboard propped up against the trunk of a thorn tree, under which she and a few other children would learn their ABC’s and basic counting. Later she would go on to attend the primary school in Ndonyo Wasin where she found herself excelling in math and science. She achieved 260 marks on her KCPE exams which was lower than we had hoped for. However, she received a place at Kisima Girls School and because she had been consistently achieving marks of 300 or more on her term exams for the past 2 years we decided to support her.
Estalina’s parents and family are traditional nomadic pastoralists whose livelihood is greatly affected by drought and geological conditions. In the drought of 2011, they lost 15 cows and 20 goats. The remaining livestock are looked after by her older brothers. Her family would never be able to afford to send her to school. Her mother attributes Estalina’s success to her hard work in school, and Estalina attributes it to her dreams of becoming an accountant and one day travelling outside of Kenya to see the rest of the world.
